BROKEN

‘’He is the most amazing. He has the most beautiful eyes. He takes care of me, buys me everything I want. Really, he is perfect…..except one thing. Well, when he gets angry, I get broken. I’m his little china doll. But I don’t mind. I can survive it. He’s everything to me. I will stay. I’ll just pray he loses this habit. Maybe it’s my fault. Maybe i should try to be more perfect for him. I’ll lose weight; I’ll do everything he tells me to. You see, these are the thoughts that run through my mind’. You wouldn’t understand. I can’t live without him. I just can’t’’.

Yes my dear, I don’t understand. I don’t think I ever will. Why should I understand why you choose to let someone control your choice to live or not? You were not born to be a punching bag. That’s not love, that is stupidity, greed and weakness. See how all three are joined together? Stupid because you say love is pain, greedy because you stay due to the little things you benefit from him and weak because you won’t stand up to him.

Being broken can be emotional and it can be physical. Now, I’m not talking about the girl who doesn’t have a choice but to stay. I’m talking to you, you that you leave and come back to what broke you. First rule of relationships; break ups are meant for you to learn a lesson and move on, emphasis on actually ‘moving on’.
In the case of emotional abuse, where he is calling you all sorts of names, yelling, blaming, shaming, intimidation, controlling behaviour and saying words that just damage your soul like someone set off a chainsaw in your heart…you have to leave. Anyone who cannot encourage you to grow and become a better person does not deserve a spot in your life. You may see it as nothing and turn a blind eye due to some petty benefits attached to the guy but sadly, no matter what, those words will continue to eat you up until you fall into depression. Positive words help you grow, negative words kill you slowly. If he can’t accept you for who you are, the way you are, please walk away. Don’t punish yourself because its love’. While you may think that physical abuse is worse than emotional abuse, emotional abuse is just as lethal. It eats away your self worth and makes you feel that you can’t do anything without that person. Don’t make excuses for him. Just leave because no matter how much you try to change such a person, the time you spend trying will be enough for you to lose yourself. There is a limit to how much you can do to help a person.
Mrs ‘he is not always violent. Its only when he sees me around other guys or when he is upset with me. He just loves me so much’. Please walk away. Whatever good thing he has to offer, something better will come. You don’t have to put your life in the hands of a man. It’s not worth it. Don’t call it love or endurance either. Some will even tell you to endure the bad just as you enjoy the good. Please don’t listen to them. And if you enjoy the pain, please seek help. Don’t let anyone drain you of the will to live. I’m not saying you should fight him or beat him to a pulp. Just walk away and make something better of yourself.
Most importantly, before going into any relationship, please be careful. As the Yoruba would say,’gbogbo nnkan to n dan ko ni wura’, which loosely translates to ‘not all that glitters is gold’. Don’t go tripping for a guy because he’s cute and generous and caring and perfect. There’s no such thing as the perfect guy. Wait, watch, listen and learn. Observe all his traits before you jump into a relationship. No girl ever walks into a violent or abusive relationship willingly. The guy is always perfect in the beginning. Be warned.
Now, in a case where you’re already a victim or you’re about to become a victim of such abuse [you notice that your guy has some of the traits already] please walk away while you can. If you can’t, seek professional help. There are help centres all over Nigeria for victims of domestic abuse and violence. Don’t keep it to yourself. You would be saving your life if you seek for help. We all learn from our mistakes. Make sure you live long enough to learn from yours or rather…don’t make them at all.

Despite being his debut album, the “Omo-Alhaji” crooner delivers a brilliant body of work which showcases two contrasting but somewhat similar personalities; YCee, the singer represented by ice and ZAHEER, the rapper represented by fire.

The mesmerizing 15-track body of work opens with the Adey produced ‘It’s Amazing’, captivates with ‘Wahala Dey’, inspires with ‘Bossing’ featuring Ms. Banks, and rocks with ‘Chocolata’ featuring Niniola. Featuring Nigerian music industry’s top acts like Davido, Phyno and Dapo Tuburna added to the excellence of the album.

Interestingly, the oldest song on the album was recorded in 2017 and the most recent, in October 2019. More interesting is the fact that the album was recorded in 5 different countries including Nigeria, Canada, USA, UK, and Uganda.

In celebration of this tremendous feat and indisputable input of hard work, another album listening party was held on Thursday, 6th of November, 2019 at the Artisan Lounge, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was hosted by Sheye Banks and Manolo Spanky with sounds from Smallz The DJ.

Google announces Traffic tab in Maps

Published

on

By

Google, on the 6th of November 2019, launched a new Traffic  tab in Google Maps in Lagos, Nigeria. Announced in July at Google for Nigeria, the new Traffic tab offers users a snapshot of the information they care about most: traffic, weather, bus stop busyness, and current expected fare levels for Danfo.

The Traffic tab provides bus riders with information to help them find their most efficient route, both in travel time and transport costs. Until now, Google Maps users have only been able to access information for other forms of transportation including cars, 2-wheelers, BRT and ride hailing.

The Traffic tab includes a new directions experience, which features suggested routes which may combine walking, taking a Keke or okada, Danfo or BRT. Information about the estimated fare range, expected travel time and pictures of the stops along the route are now available to aid travellers on their trips around Lagos. Clicking on the pictures will allow users to get a 360 degree view on StreetView to help them better understand their location.

“What we have built for Lagos is a global first for Google Maps, and a step towards helping people in many other cities where transport can be informally organized as it is in Nigeria,” comments Jeff Albertson, Senior Product Manager, Google Maps.

Says Jeff: “We co-designed this product with people in Lagos. It was an engaging process to start from scratch, bring diverse teams of Googlers to Lagos, interview Lagosians and Local Guides, understand local needs, and then design something that weaves together all the many ways that people here move around.”.

The launch of this new Traffic tab follows the introduction, in July, of a dedicated travel mode in Google Maps to provide directions and navigation for motorcycles in Nigeria. Google also launched navigation guidance in a Nigerian voice for both motorcycle and car driving modes at the same time.

Google also recently published more panoramic imagery on Street View, to help make it easier to visually explore places in Nigeria, including imagery of Abuja, Benin City, Enugu and Ibadan – with almost 12 thousand kilometers of roads added.

“Nigeria is important to us. Beyond providing tools to help Nigerians use Maps, we also want to continue to bring more of Nigeria to the map. It’s a journey that we are happy to be on,” Jeff concludes
