New Disease Alert! WHO Warns Nigeria and 15 Other Countries of Listeriosis Outbreak

Published

on

The World Health Organisation, on Wednesday warned Nigeria and 15 other African countries of a listeriosis outbreak that started in South Africa in 2017. They confirmed their support for their preparedness and response to the disease. The other African countries include Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Listeriosis is a bacterial infection which is most commonly caused by Listeria monocytogenes. It can cause severe illness, including severe sepsis, meningitis, or encephalitis, sometimes resulting in lifelong harm and even death. It can be present in raw milk and foods made from raw milk. It can also live in food processing plants and contaminate a variety of processed meats.

Listeria is common and is primarily transmitted via the oral route after ingestion of contaminated food products such as:

  • Ready-to-eat deli meats and hot dogs
  • Refrigerated pâtés or meat spreads
  • Unpasteurized (raw) milk and dairy products
  • Soft cheese made with unpasteurized milk, such as queso fresco, Feta, Brie, Camembert
  • Refrigerated smoked seafood
  • Raw sprouts

It has an incubation period of 3 to 70 days and according to the World Health Organization,200 South Africans have died since January 2017 as a result of contaminated ready-to-eat meat products that are widely consumed in the country and may also have been exported to two West African countries and 14 members of the South African Development Community. As a result of this, South African health authorities recently declared the source of the outbreak as a factory in Polokwane, in the country’s northeast which in turn led to a global recall of the food products.

Ways to Prevent Listeriosis

  • Do not drink raw (unpasteurized) milk, and do not eat foods that have unpasteurized milk in them.
  • Wash hands, knives, countertops, and cutting boards after handling and preparing uncooked foods.
  • Rinse raw produce thoroughly under running tap water before eating.
  • Keep uncooked meats, poultry, and seafood separate from vegetables, fruits, cooked foods, and ready-to-eat foods.
  • Thoroughly cook raw food from animal sources, such as meat, poultry, or seafood to a safe internal temperature.
  • Wash hands, knives, countertops, and cutting boards after handling and preparing uncooked foods.
  • Consume perishable and ready-to-eat foods as soon as possible.

Remember, prevention is way better than cure

Published

By

Over time, ladies( and a couple of guys) have tried various methods for weight loss, some being less effective than others or even tedious. Methods such as drinking slimming teas, chewing tons of garden eggs, squats, full blown exercises, etc.

However, in recent times,a new method was introduced, one that has certainly caught the attention of people due to its effectiveness. Its called the keto diet. The keto diet in plain English is a zero carbohydrate diet, that is, any food that has carbohydrates would be avoided over a long period of time so it breaks down fat in the liver and burns ketones as the primary source of energy in the body.

Of course, obtaining the keto plan here in Nigeria is about N5000 if not note but if you are diligent, it could work for you. Here’s the thing; when we hear keto diet,it sounds so simple but the truth is,its actually difficult because about 90% of the meals you eat contain carbohydrates and once you take them out,you realize you have litlossuto nothing left. Take a look

Do Not Eat

Grains – wheat, corn, rice, cereal

Sugar – honey, agave, maple syrup

Fruit – apples, bananas, oranges

Tubers – potato, yams,

Starch- beans,legumes

Do Eat

Meats – fish, beef, lamb, poultry, eggs,

Leafy Greens – spinach, kale,

Above ground vegetables – broccoli, cauliflower,

High Fat Dairy – hard cheeses, high fat cream, butter,

Nuts and seeds – macadamias, walnuts, sunflower

seeds, etc.

Avocado and berries – raspberries, blackberries, and

other low glycemic impact berries

Sweeteners – stevia, erythritol, monk fruit, and other

low-carb sweeteners

Other fats – coconut oil, high-fat salad dressing,

saturated fats, etc.

The rates are more 70% fats, 25% protein, and

5% carbohydrate .

Benefits of Keto Diet

It helps with weight loss

It helps to control your blood sugar, reducing it(for diabetic people)

It is a cure for epilepsy

Increases mental power

Lower blood pressure

Lower cholesterol

Increases energy

Normalizes your hunger

After Effects of Ketogenic Diet

Nothing is perfect. If you’re trying a ketogenic diet, you should know that you wouldn’t be losing weight in just one place. It would be a general weight loss from stomach, to butt to other regions of your body.

Also,in the first couple of days and weeks you start the diet, you would experience symptoms such as:

the “keto flu”- headaches, brain fogginess, fatigue

P.s: there are specific carbless wheat based meals. It is quite the journey but worth it at the end. The best advice that could be given is to not go overboard with it.

Understanding Your Skin

Published

on

By

Beauty begins with the proper caring of the skin.

Believe it or not your skin is the largest organ of your body. It is a living organ which heals and renews itself constantly. It covers your entire body and consists of two clearly defined layers:

The epidermis is the superficial or outermost layer. In other words, this is the skin we can see and feel. It forms the protective covering. This layer contains no blood vessels but has small nerve endings and is made up of five layers of cells. The pigment called melanin is found in this layer. Melanin protects the sensitive cells beneath, from the harmful effects of the sun. The greater the exposure to sunlight the greater the production of melanin in your skin

The dermis or the inner layer is located just under the epidermis. This layer is highly sensitive because it contains nerve endings. It also contains numerous blood vessels, lymph vessels, sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles. These are held together by collagen and elastin fibers, which together give the skin its strength and resilience.

Each follicle has a sebaceous gland, which produces sebum. Excess sebum makes your skin look and feel oily. If the neck of a sebaceous gland is clogged, sebum accumulates, giving rise to acne. A deficiency in the production of sebum produces dry skin.

Your teenage years could be your best time or your worst time depending on your hormonal activity. Generally, puberty is a bad time for your skin.

While these changes occur naturally as you age, they can be minimized and controlled by properly caring for your skin. Cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin twice daily can help you rejuvenate and revive your skin. Now that you have a better understanding of your skin and how it works, I am sure you will appreciate that the time to begin your personal skin care routine is NOW
