Mr. Eazi’s Lagos to London Mixtape is a Banging Medley Of Afrobeat Greatness

Published

on

Mr Eazi returns to level out and one-up the playing field with a meaty collection of Bankufied magic on Life is Eazi Vol. 2 – Lagos to London, his third and most accomplished studio offering.

Recorded mostly between the cities of Lagos and London, and in-between sell-out shows and chart-topping collaborations with the likes of US-based globetrotting sonic chemists Major Lazer (“Tied Up”); English drum-n-bass collective Rudimental (“Let me live”); and mind-shifting singer/songwriters Raye, Mo and Anne-Marie, this follow-up to Life is Eazi Vol. 1 – Accra to Lagos is a crackling marker in a progressive, stellar career.

The thirteen songs on this set are arranged such that the listener’s taken on an exclusive and trippy ride down coastal avenues and uptown highways.

Simi’s songwriting prowess manifests light on “Surrender”, while Afrobeats’ grand-don Tuface makes a welcome appearance on “Suffer Head”, which takes a leaf from Sister Nancy and breathes West African flair to her timeless classic, “Bam Bam”. Fela gets a nod on the Azonto-leaning Open and Close”, while Burna Boy is invited to cast out bad spells and soothe the heart on “Miss You Bad”. Reggae Revival lynchpin Chronixx utters righteous vibrations of love and understanding on the nice an’ easy charm of “She Loves Me”. Elsewhere are “Keys to the City (Ogede)”, “Property” (alongside South African band Mi Casa’s Mo-T), and “London Town”, where the Landlord Giggs spits bars alongside Mr Eazi’s urgent-sounding licks that warn informants and badminds to quit acting tough on “London Town”.

The production is just as varied; Zimbabwe’s Simba Tagz can be found twisting knobs along Ghana’s GuiltyBeatz, while London resident and long-term Afrobeats innovator Juls withers the wires and connects dots with Nigeria’s own heat-crafters, Sarz and E kelly. UK-based producers FredAgain, Jae5, Alistair and Jay Weathers also contribute their audio tricks to enhance the resultant magic.

Banku transcends borders, slang, genre; it’s a chef’s special, a delightful treat and a pleasurable sensation fit for audio scholars and curious sonic tourists to consume. Kenyan Sheng and Naija Pidgin blend with London street talk and Jamaican Patois; area codes melt into vibrant one-street carnivals and arena-sized jump-off’s; hyper-local beats tease the world stage — Grime becomes Azonto, which backtracks into dancehall and Afrobeats. Highlife, nu-age RnB and genre-less musical expressions bend Mr Eazi’s gleeful spirit, and re-direct it via busy metropoles where danfo taxis and double-decker buses rule the motorways.

Raw, live and direct from the heart, Life is Eazi Vol. 2 – Lagos to London is going to stand the test of time, and perhaps surpass it.

On the 18th of June, 2019, YouTube Nigeria kicked off a whole week of activities, content premieres, and fan meet and greets in Lagos  with the award of a number of Gold and Silver Play Buttons to local YouTube Creators.

Gold Play Buttons are awarded to channels which have reached the one million subscriber mark, and Silver to those which have garnered 100,000 subscribers. On the first day, D’banj picked up a Silver Play Button in recognition of achieving 100,000 subscriptions to his YouTube channel, while Neptune3 Studios, 2Baba Idibia, Teni and Adekunle Gold received similar awards during the course of the week. Flavour, whose channel has crossed the one million subscriber mark, picked a Gold Play Button during the week.

The Play Buttons were presented at a media event in Lagos, where Addy Awofisayo, YouTube Partnerships Manager, outlined the activities underway that week.

A week-long bootcamp for YouTube Creators started on Monday morning and ended  in a graduation ceremony and wrap party on Friday, 21 June. The Bootcamp covered topics like channel & content strategy, working with brands, creator responsibility, production, and accelerating growth on YouTube. A public YouTube Masterclass  held on Saturday, for registered participants.

Throughout the week, YouTube Nigeria premiered new original series including the D’Banj ‘Adventures KokoMaster’ series, which premiered on Monday, the ‘Brotherhood’ series premiere from Accelerate TV on Tuesday, the SceneOne ‘Ayetoro’ series premiere on Wednesday and an evening with Tuface Idibia (2Baba) on Thursday.

“Nigeria has a culture that is steeped in sharing and storytelling, and Nigerians are passionate about music, entertainment and education,” says Addy Awofisayo, YouTube partnerships manager. “Since its launch in Nigeria in 2011, we’ve provided a platform for Nigerians to share the country’s unique and diverse culture on a global stage, and also offer Nigerian users more relevant content.

Over 5000 hours of content are uploaded to YouTube every minute, says Awofisayo. “YouTube attracts a global generation that has grown up watching what they want, whenever they want, on whatever device is closest. What happens on YouTube is a reflection of what is important and relevant to the world. YouTube has a large and passionate community where people gather and express themselves, share experiences, and reflect on what they think about and care about moment to moment. We’re very excited, this week, to bring YouTube’s Creator community and fans together to share, learn and celebrate YouTube and the Nigerian Creators who are taking our culture to the world.” she added.
