“Black Panther” Brings new meaning to African Fashion

Published

on

While African-inspired fashion has been on the rise, the fashion on display at Marvel’s “Black Panther” premiere seemed to take its popularity to another level.

The African Fashion week of “Black Panther” came with so much joy as lots of movie goers flocked the movie houses in their Traditional African dresses,Shirts, head wraps and more.

Many black Movie goers even said the movie provided an opportunity for them to celebrate their heritage in a way they haven’t been able to before.

Some stated that they were really happy and impressed because they get to be represented in a movie that’s not about slavery, neither is it about trials nor tribulations but instead about a powerful African Empire.

To Some, Black Panther” has sparked something different — an opportunity for black movie goers to watch a superhero who not only looks like them, but also introduces a different view of Africa than has traditionally been seen at theaters .

The film had been praised for its vision of Afrofuturism, Strong and female characters and a story that shatters stereotypes about the continents and its people.

The film earned $25.2 million in Thursday showings, making it the biggest debut of a February release and the second-largest early opening of a Marvel Studios feature.

At the premiere, Hollywood actors wore stunning outfits inspired by the fictional African kingdom Wakanda, and it was a sea of bold color and design. Lupita N’yongo was decked in a beautiful gold and aubergine gown, and Angela Bassett brought it in a yellow outfit that felt like an homage to ancient Egypt

Kelechi Anyadiegwu, the founder and CEO of Zuvaa, a global marketplace for African-inspired fashion, credits African fashion designers for creating the current buzz around “Black Panther” and African-inspired fashion.

Award-winning singer and songwriter, Waje graces the cover of the second quarter edition of Glazia Magazine.

In the special feature, Waje opens up to discuss life, body positivity, finding love, new music, and new direction.

Waje’s magazine cover comes a few days after the release of her free democracy day single titled “Need Each Other”.

Below are selected excerpts from the interview.

Omawumi O: This edition of the magazine is inspired by Mother Nature, what does nature mean to you as a person?

Waje: Nature to me is life because the creation can’t even be described without nature… The Garden of Eden…you know what I mean? There is so much that the greenery and plants give to us that keep our survival and there are so many things that keep us going and inspire who we are just by being surrounded by nature. Nature is literarily our existence. Nature is our existence that’s how I will put it.

Omawumi O:  I like that nature is our existence that’s a nice quotable quote. Does nature inspire you in your music?

Waje: You know there was a time in my life where I sort of got a writer’s block. I couldn’t really do much and a friend of mine told me to try writing when I have long trips on the plane and strangely enough, it was great. It was a daytime flight, I was looking outside, the light was coming in through my windows, and I was seeing the clouds and their different shapes. You know when you look at the clouds, you suddenly start forming images and it’s so funny, there was one that looked like three people. There, I got the song I wanted to write which is in my up and coming EP. So yeah, it does inspire me.

The Magazine will be available from Monday, June 4th, 2018 at  https://glaziang.com/store/
