The Big Question: Career Woman or Housewife?

Published

Memoir of a Teen in Transit:

The Big Question: Career Woman or Housewife?

I would like to start with a story. Growing up, I was taught the value of being an independent woman by my mother. As time started passing by, I started watching movies where the female protagonist gets showered and spoilt with gifts simply for being beautiful. The men would say “baby you don’t have to worry about lifting a finger, I’ll take care of your needs” but mama was watching those movies with me. And whenever these scenes occur, she would tell me not to fall for such “lies”. At the end of the movie, after the lady has succumbed, it would either be that he disrespects her, uses her for ritual, dumps her, marries a wife above her or worst of all, he dies and leaves her with nothing to take care of herself and her children. Also, if she becomes a career woman, the education and moral status of her children suffered. None of these factors were pleasing to me so I chose to observe in order to understand life better.
Fast forward to University years, the real confusion occurred. I met girls who don’t life a finger to work for anything but the money came to them. It was not a matter of sex in exchange for money. I met girls who only have one ambition; MARRY A RICH MAN. I met guys who study very hard in school because they do not want their wives to lack anything. I met the ambitious ones but they aren’t interested in getting married and don’t even give a hoot about children. I met girls who were already mothers by nature. I met girls who feel insulted if any guy tries to spend on them. I met guys who feel repulsed by ladies who ask or collect things from them (Why give it though?). But here was my concern; I am working for the little I have to spoil myself but ever since I encountered the group of girls who have random guys get things for them without doing anything for these guys, I started to wonder ‘why not me?’ ‘Why can’t I be the girl who says she wants a phone today and gets it the next month instead of the one who wants it today and gets it next year?’ ‘Why do I even have these thoughts?’ ‘Does that make me lazy?’ Selfish? Unambitious? Greedy?

Some people might tell me that having these thoughts makes me greedy and probably someone who has lost her way but I’m calling out your B.S. It’s no imperfection for wanting to be spoiled. As great as self love is, sometimes it feels so good to know you have people who occasionally make you feel special. A lot of us have these fantasies even if it is rare and it makes you wonder “WHAT IF?” There is a popular saying “Many are mad but few are roaming”. You see a lot of people want some things while others just live these fantasies out. Yen yen yen, there are loopholes, and not all that glitters is gold bla bla. We know that. I’m not saying you should jump for any guy that throws money in your face but at least acknowledge the fact that you would like to be appreciated even if its once. That’s not the point anyway
Asides the regular argument about the career woman and the housewife, how do I know what to choose? How will i be able to cope with it if my husband asks me to drop years of education, experience and hustle? What is the point of fighting for a first class if you won’t ever use it?
On the other hand, a housewife is a superhero. For someone who hardly lifts a finger at home, how will she adapt? Some people equate housewife with a trophy wife. It’s not all about slaying at parties. How do you make your money?

This is written out of curiosity. From the moment I got introduced to the real hustle of work, I’ve come to realize that in order to be truly successful, you won’t even have time for yourself much less anyone else. This scares me and I keep trying to make sense of how I will be able to work things out. I do want to be successful but I also want a family, in every sense of the word. Watching my mother and my mentors, it baffles me how they are able to be career women and amazing mothers at the same time. They deserve all the accolades. But here I am, still trying to figure it out. Or am I just too fast paced? I guess I’m just cautious. I guess I’ll just have to keep working hard and pray for some direction.

Despite being his debut album, the “Omo-Alhaji” crooner delivers a brilliant body of work which showcases two contrasting but somewhat similar personalities; YCee, the singer represented by ice and ZAHEER, the rapper represented by fire.

The mesmerizing 15-track body of work opens with the Adey produced ‘It’s Amazing’, captivates with ‘Wahala Dey’, inspires with ‘Bossing’ featuring Ms. Banks, and rocks with ‘Chocolata’ featuring Niniola. Featuring Nigerian music industry’s top acts like Davido, Phyno and Dapo Tuburna added to the excellence of the album.

Interestingly, the oldest song on the album was recorded in 2017 and the most recent, in October 2019. More interesting is the fact that the album was recorded in 5 different countries including Nigeria, Canada, USA, UK, and Uganda.

In celebration of this tremendous feat and indisputable input of hard work, another album listening party was held on Thursday, 6th of November, 2019 at the Artisan Lounge, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was hosted by Sheye Banks and Manolo Spanky with sounds from Smallz The DJ.

Google announces Traffic tab in Maps

Published

on

By

Google, on the 6th of November 2019, launched a new Traffic  tab in Google Maps in Lagos, Nigeria. Announced in July at Google for Nigeria, the new Traffic tab offers users a snapshot of the information they care about most: traffic, weather, bus stop busyness, and current expected fare levels for Danfo.

The Traffic tab provides bus riders with information to help them find their most efficient route, both in travel time and transport costs. Until now, Google Maps users have only been able to access information for other forms of transportation including cars, 2-wheelers, BRT and ride hailing.

The Traffic tab includes a new directions experience, which features suggested routes which may combine walking, taking a Keke or okada, Danfo or BRT. Information about the estimated fare range, expected travel time and pictures of the stops along the route are now available to aid travellers on their trips around Lagos. Clicking on the pictures will allow users to get a 360 degree view on StreetView to help them better understand their location.

“What we have built for Lagos is a global first for Google Maps, and a step towards helping people in many other cities where transport can be informally organized as it is in Nigeria,” comments Jeff Albertson, Senior Product Manager, Google Maps.

Says Jeff: “We co-designed this product with people in Lagos. It was an engaging process to start from scratch, bring diverse teams of Googlers to Lagos, interview Lagosians and Local Guides, understand local needs, and then design something that weaves together all the many ways that people here move around.”.

The launch of this new Traffic tab follows the introduction, in July, of a dedicated travel mode in Google Maps to provide directions and navigation for motorcycles in Nigeria. Google also launched navigation guidance in a Nigerian voice for both motorcycle and car driving modes at the same time.

Google also recently published more panoramic imagery on Street View, to help make it easier to visually explore places in Nigeria, including imagery of Abuja, Benin City, Enugu and Ibadan – with almost 12 thousand kilometers of roads added.

“Nigeria is important to us. Beyond providing tools to help Nigerians use Maps, we also want to continue to bring more of Nigeria to the map. It’s a journey that we are happy to be on,” Jeff concludes
