You Know You are Nigerian When…

Published

on

You know you are Nigerian when…

  1. When someone calls you and you are waiting for them to speak first

It is not me you will use for ritual

  1. Versus when it turns out to be someone from the Abroad

Your accent will just change overnight. Jumoke, innit?

  1. We die here” “We die here”If they steal my money, I will just die” but you lowkey say God forbid afterwards

You see that your head is not correct

  1. When you try to jump a queue and experience the full Nigerian aggression

So we that we are here, we don’t have sense abi? Na so fish dey fly?

  1. When you hear proverbs like:

He who goes to sleep with an itchy anus wakes up with smelly fingers

  1. When you tell your father you are gay/lesbian

Won ti pada get me sha (so they have finally gotten me)

  1. Or when you tell him you want to drop out of school, because Bill Gates did it too

Your mother dropped you when you were a child, I just know

  1. When you get to the market and you are forming accent for the pepper seller

Abi this one took weed ni?

  1. You have 500 naira and you enter a bus of 50 naira where conductor is shouting “enter with your change” but you don’t care. He will find the change anyhow

I cannot come and kill myself

  1. Finally, you know you are Nigerian when you have throwback pictures like this

On a serious note though, I love Nigeria. Sure, we have our faults and errors but that is what makes us who we are. As much as we may try to copy white people, these same white people envy us and want to be like us.

  • They have thanksgiving, we have rice every Sunday
  • They played daddy and mummy as kids, we did so much more than that. We had baba suwe, ten ten, Cinderella but to mention a few.

The value and beauty of Africans lies in our tradition and culture. It gives us this mystique to be eccentric. It has even become an undeniable fact that Nigerians are dominating the world sphere today. We are bringing something new and we just bring our environment alive. So no, I am not ashamed to be a Nigerian. No country is perfect. I believe that, regardless of circumstances, we will get there someday. Its just a matter of time.

I love Nigeria because our imperfect nature is what makes unique. We’re always in the news. What is your favourite thing about being Nigerian?

Despite being his debut album, the “Omo-Alhaji” crooner delivers a brilliant body of work which showcases two contrasting but somewhat similar personalities; YCee, the singer represented by ice and ZAHEER, the rapper represented by fire.

The mesmerizing 15-track body of work opens with the Adey produced ‘It’s Amazing’, captivates with ‘Wahala Dey’, inspires with ‘Bossing’ featuring Ms. Banks, and rocks with ‘Chocolata’ featuring Niniola. Featuring Nigerian music industry’s top acts like Davido, Phyno and Dapo Tuburna added to the excellence of the album.

Interestingly, the oldest song on the album was recorded in 2017 and the most recent, in October 2019. More interesting is the fact that the album was recorded in 5 different countries including Nigeria, Canada, USA, UK, and Uganda.

In celebration of this tremendous feat and indisputable input of hard work, another album listening party was held on Thursday, 6th of November, 2019 at the Artisan Lounge, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was hosted by Sheye Banks and Manolo Spanky with sounds from Smallz The DJ.

Google announces Traffic tab in Maps

Published

on

By

Google, on the 6th of November 2019, launched a new Traffic  tab in Google Maps in Lagos, Nigeria. Announced in July at Google for Nigeria, the new Traffic tab offers users a snapshot of the information they care about most: traffic, weather, bus stop busyness, and current expected fare levels for Danfo.

The Traffic tab provides bus riders with information to help them find their most efficient route, both in travel time and transport costs. Until now, Google Maps users have only been able to access information for other forms of transportation including cars, 2-wheelers, BRT and ride hailing.

The Traffic tab includes a new directions experience, which features suggested routes which may combine walking, taking a Keke or okada, Danfo or BRT. Information about the estimated fare range, expected travel time and pictures of the stops along the route are now available to aid travellers on their trips around Lagos. Clicking on the pictures will allow users to get a 360 degree view on StreetView to help them better understand their location.

“What we have built for Lagos is a global first for Google Maps, and a step towards helping people in many other cities where transport can be informally organized as it is in Nigeria,” comments Jeff Albertson, Senior Product Manager, Google Maps.

Says Jeff: “We co-designed this product with people in Lagos. It was an engaging process to start from scratch, bring diverse teams of Googlers to Lagos, interview Lagosians and Local Guides, understand local needs, and then design something that weaves together all the many ways that people here move around.”.

The launch of this new Traffic tab follows the introduction, in July, of a dedicated travel mode in Google Maps to provide directions and navigation for motorcycles in Nigeria. Google also launched navigation guidance in a Nigerian voice for both motorcycle and car driving modes at the same time.

Google also recently published more panoramic imagery on Street View, to help make it easier to visually explore places in Nigeria, including imagery of Abuja, Benin City, Enugu and Ibadan – with almost 12 thousand kilometers of roads added.

“Nigeria is important to us. Beyond providing tools to help Nigerians use Maps, we also want to continue to bring more of Nigeria to the map. It’s a journey that we are happy to be on,” Jeff concludes
